Also I tried to find a current rulebook recently Bc I was dying to know how they handle cell phones now that you can get your hands on practically anything at the touch of a screen

We were not in the Hyles or BJU camp. I heard a lot about Sightler and Green, so I guess we were kind of in that group. I went to Tennessee Temple elementary in 6 th grade and stayed through college. I was exposed to a slightly different - and slightly more liberal - branch of IFB there.
It may be that the strictest branches of the IFB are losing steam, but I definitely think elements of it will continue for awhile.
Rulebreaker, I wonder if WCBC is stricter than Crown? My husband went there for a short time.

Bob Jones University. Though I came to BJU from the Plymouth Brethren. By way of Carl McIntyre and Billy James Hargis. You don't know about the Plymouth Brethren? Well, they are a kind of group closely related to Mennonite and independent Baptist. But they are heavy on end-time teaching. Really heavy. All your pre-trib Rapture post-trib millennial Kingdom doctrine came from them.

As I said, "by way of" .... McIntyre and Hargis were big politicizers of the religious right in their day, and they not only drew lines in the sand, they etched them in concrete. They proclaimed themselves the vanguard of the Lord's army. Well, at least until Hargis had that little sex scandal
at his American Christian College.

So when I went to BJU, I was more extreme than a Pensacola Ruckmannite. I started my path to liberalism from there.

My best friend and some other buddies of mine went to Crown. My best friend got put on probation where he couldn't see his girlfriend for several weeks because he was caught off campus with her (someone told on them). My other buddy said he would sneak to see a movie and would wear shorts and a hoodie with earbuds in so that nobody would recognize him as being from Crown. We talked about how freaking weird that is. Here these people are ages 20-23 and they can't even go to the movies or eat at a restaurant with a person of the opposite sex! It's crazy. Fundy U's treat adults like they are 13 year olds at camp. That was the suckiest part about BJU too. Geez. These people must think all college kids want to do is screw and drink (well...)

I was a townie (lived off campus; thank God!) when I was at BJU. I had all my preset dials in my car set for all the approved BJU radio stations. I would listen to "worldy" music all the way to school and then as I was turning into the campus would hit preset 1 to the opera of BJ's radio station WMUU.

If anyone told me they were going to be going to BJU as a student I would tell them one piece of advice: "DO NOT BREAK THE RULES WITH A FELLOW STUDENT BECAUSE BIBLE CONFERENCE IS COMING UP AND FELLOW STUDENTS GET "RIGHT WITH GOD" AND BRING YOU DOWN WITH THEM WHEN THEY GO CONFESS.

Wow, those were some crazy days. But I finished up there in 2009. I've heard things are a lot different.

Please do share! I'm not being sarcastic at all. I really want to know what's changed. Are you a former WCBC'er too? How do you attain your insider info? Have their dress/music/dating  standards changed? We used to get yelled at for wearing jean skirts that had fading on them. I would seriously keel over from shock if they allowed women to wear pants, come within 6 inches of a dude, or listen to anything other than their music (bass back beats of southern gospel are evil donchaknow) I still have nightmares of the Weaves telling me I can't have more than 3 items on my dresser, my skirt was a little too form fitting,  or suggesting I met up with a dude when my ride didn't pick me up from the airport and I had to take a bus to the hotel cause I had nowhere to go from LAX at 10pm.

Rules haven't changed yet but they are not enforced as strictly as before. You have to remember that the Weavers are no longer in charge, they have a softie as the Dean of Students now. Can't share details of who I am, just know me as IFB Deep Throat. 

Concerning their alumni, see Chappell's two sons and several of their more well known alumni grads. They are all contemporary. Look at the church service on Sunday. Chappell's been pushing the line slowly but has to slow down because the old guard of the IFB movement are still alive.

No Weavers?! Wow I AM out of the loop. When did that happen? No more "papa weave" shouting about "character! You've gotta have character!" And "mama weave" just being her militant self? Lol

I am so out of the loop now about what's happening in the IFB world that wouldn't even try to comment on it. What has my attention - because I'm attending an SBC church, for now... - is the fundamentalist-leaning sect that's growing in influence in the SBC. But that's a whole different story, and not one for this thread.

My parents and I started attending an IFB church when I was a kid not because they were convinced that it had the truest doctrine, but because there were no SBC churches in the area. The one that we attended was lead by a pastor from Moody who held to standards that were recognizably fundamentalist, but not as extreme as the other IFB churches. We weren't really in any IFB camps per se; the other local IFB churches, of the HAC and PCC camps, kept separate from us because we were too "liberal." When that pastor retired, the church decided that they wanted an "old fashioned" preacher, i.e. one who yells and demands impossibly high standards, so they got a guy who graduated from PCC but had the intensity of a HAC-er. We left about that time, and so I don't know how things are going now, other than that a significant number of other people left shortly after we did.

While my parents (and by extension, I) never fully bought in to the KJV-onlyism, extreme separation, and other craziness, I still subconsciously was affected by the fear-based religion, worm theology, and culture of shame. Anyhow, I wanted to study engineering, so IFB colleges were never on my radar, and I ended up going to a state university where I attended first a not-fundamentalist Baptist church and later a conservative-leaning but contemporary-worship Presbyterian church. Exposure to all sorts of people ended up moderating my political and social views. But it took me figuring out several years after I graduated that I'm 100% gay to turn me into the flaming liberal that I am today (ok, mostly kidding, but if the far-right people at my church knew what I really think, that's how they'd see me).

I'm familiar with all the names James mentioned above. But will admit after 10 years, I am VERY out of the IFB loop. I didn't realize Carey Schmidt had left. I also went to college with a Teri's. A female- maybe a relative of his.

However, I'm curious what makes James say that they will stop preaching on women wearing pants, going to the theater, contemporary music etc. unless things have changed BIG TIME in the past 9-10 years, I don't see Paul Chappell ever letting those things go. And I agree- Chappell is a powerful dude.

Ps CampmeetingLiberal: in my circles BJU was also considered quite liberal

WCBC doesn't have anything on HBC in Oklahoma... I didn't go reading the handbook was enough to scare me away...but I had friends who went and the stories they told were enough to confirm that they really did enforce the handbook.
